Cabo San Lucas History

The southern end of the peninsula was inhabited by the nomadic Pericues for many centuries. They lived on disciplines like hunting, fishing and collecting fruit, seeds, roots, and shellfish. In the 1500’s the first Europeans arrived in the area and began the territory conquest ending the quiet lives of the Pericues.

Several Spanish expeditions approached the coast of California. In 1535, Hernan Cortez, having heard of the existence of pearls in these waters, tried to invade the Peninsula. Hernan Cortes abandoned the area when realizing he had just followed a myth. On March, 1602 Viceroy Count of Monterrey, Gaspar Zuñiga y Acevedo, had General Sebastian Vizcaino find ports of refuge for the galleons of Manila. The three ships, the San Diego, the Santo Tomas, and the Tres Reyes sailed from the port of Acapulco north to the cape at Mendocino. Antonio de la Ascencion, a Carmelite monk, who was part of the crew, became famous for his accurate maps and journals that described the coast and were used for navigating until the end of the 18th century. The monk is also remembered for having giving the site the name of Cabo San Lucas, to honor Saint Luke.

Then, Cabo San Lucas became a fishing village, but in the 1920’s, thanks to an American company that opened a floating platform to catch tuna fish and later on, a company of marine products in the town, Cabo San Lucas started showing its growing potential.

By the 1940’s, Cabo San Lucas served as a playground to the wealthy people. But the importance of sport fishing in the region began attracting visitors from other countries, who, realizing of the natural marvels of Cabo San Lucas, started considering it a beach destination. In 1994, the Mexican government resolved to invest in the area and Cabo San Lucas, as we know it, with its awe-inspiring infrastructure, was born.
